The Scooter has a long history with scooter like characteristics first appearing in the 1900's. Hildebrand and Wolfmueller produced the first Scooter like motorcycle as early as 1894. Over the proceeding decades Scooters began to take shape around the world. At the end of WW2 Japan's Misubishi started production on the Silver Pidgeon a bike largely made from surplus world war 2 aircraft parts. Fuji also produced the Fuji Rabbit in the early 1960's whilst in Italy the post war Piaggio Vespa became a very popular and economical Scooter. The modern Scooter as is recognized to today can probably be attributed to the Italian D'Ascanio which introduced a lot of the features we would recognize on a modern scooter such as belt drive a sleek structure and a single arm replacing the front wheel forks.

The original Italian scooter company of Piaggio Vespa is still the largest maker of scooters in Europe having first been introduced and designed by the Italian motorcycle designer D’Ascanio. In recent decades Scooters from Japan have taken a large share of the scooter market worldwide with Japanese companies such as Yamaha and Honda producing many models in large quantities. Scooters have also become a cult symbol of the British 1960’s counter culture being the chosen form of transport of the fashion conscious MOD movement of the mid to late sixties.
