BMW have been making motorcycles since 1923 and are a subdivision of the BMW motorcar company. The BMW Company started life at the turn of the century as an aircraft engine manufacturer, making a number of engines for World War 1 Aircraft.

BMW Motorcycle History
BMW’s first motorcycle the R32 designed by Max Friz and put into production in 1923 with a very distinctive flat twin cylinder engine more widely known today as the boxer engine. BMW were using shaft drives in their engines up until the introduction of the F650 in 1994 and later the F800 series bikes were offered with a choice of chain drive or belt drive.
